Importance of World Apple Day for Cornish apple varieties

For Cornish Orchards, the celebration of World Apple Day is important in order for us to keep Cornish Apple variants alive and kicking. Farming Cornish apples that are healthy is highly important to maintain the high quality cider we produce each year.

Today, we took a closer look to home at our collection of Cornish Apples which is in fact one of the largest collections of Cornish apple varieties in the UK.

It all started in 1993 when Andy Atkinson, Founder of Cornish Orchards, planted three orchards drawing motivation from Cornwall Council’s project to save, rejuvenate and replant traditional apple orchards in an aim to encourage birds and wildlife onto the farm. These three orchards soon became one of the largest collections of Cornish apple varieties in the country, creating the perfect wildlife habitat.

World apple day is celebrated traditionally on October 21st each year, so to celebrate this year’s world apple day we thought we’d celebrate our collection of Cornish apples. Below is a list of some of the Cornish apple variants that we grow here at Westnorth Manor Farm in Duloe:
