A successful Cider Masterclass at the Great Cornish Food Store

The Great Cornish Food Store had their very first Cider Masterclass with Cornish Orchards which was held exclusively for their Loyalty Card club members and involved a wonderful afternoon of food pairings and Cider tasting.

The Cider Masterclass was a resounding success. The afternoon included an hour full of cider tastings by our Head Cider Maker Chris Newton who took customers through tasting notes and fascinated everyone with the different techniques we use in crafting our diverse range of ciders and soft drinks.

The loyalty card members were treated to four of our ciders that are available at the Great Cornish Food Store and included the exclusive tasting of our newly released Westnorth Manor Cider which is a dry, biscuity bottle-fermented bubbly designed for those special occasions.

Each cider was then perfectly matched with exquisite dishes from the Great Cornish Food Store’s Head Chef Nik Tinney who whipped up some real Cornish delights straight from the kitchen. The foods that were created either enhanced or changed the flavours of the selection of ciders being tasted. There were examples of complimentary and non-complimentary dishes to showcase the beauty and importance behind food pairings.

Cider Food Pairings

Blush Cider – 4% ABV – paired perfectly with the sweet chocolate Mena Dhu stout cake which is served in their café.

Farmhouse Cider – Still - 5% ABV – was completely overpowered by the vintage, 3-year matured Davidstow Cheddar, but worked beautifully with the pungent Keltic Gold from Whalesborough Cheese near Bude.

Westnorth Manor – 750ml bottle – 6.4% ABV – worked perfectly with Hummus on crostini which was highly surprising to a lot of the members, so much so that we are still thinking about how good it complimented the cider.

And finally, our Dry Cider – 5.2% ABV – this Cider has been available since April and is the recent winner of the Gold Award for the ‘Open Dry Cider Class’ at the Royal Cornwall Show’s Cider Championships 2018. The Dry cider paired perfectly with fishcakes.

It was a highly successful event and The Great Cornish Food Store received some fantastic feedback. It was great for people to understand the details into making our ciders and having the opportunity to work closely with a talented chef to come up with food pairings that people wouldn’t have really thought about.
